Mathews and Kurkis Highlight Major Award Winners at W&L
Washington and Lee University held its annual Athletic Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 17 at Lee Chapel. Headlining the award winners were senior field hockey/lacrosse player Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and senior football player Greg Kurkis (Roswell, Ga./Westminster), who were selected as the “Pres” Brown Outstanding Senior Female and Male Athletes of the Year as voted on by members of the department.

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference has announced that Washington and Lee University has claimed the 2011 Dan Wooldridge Overall Sports Champion Cup for the eighth-straight year.

Numerous W&L Students Earn Winter Scholar-Athlete Awards
Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 173 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

The Washington and Lee baseball team saw its 2011 season come to an end as the third-seeded Generals fell to No. 1 seed Bridgewater College, 7-4, on day tow of hte ODAC Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Lynchburg City Stadium.

Five Generals Earn All-ODAC Baseball Honors
FOREST, Va. – Senior righthander Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) was named the ODAC Pitcher of the Year as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference handed out its postseason awards on Wednesday afternoon. Five Washington and Lee players were honored in all.

The Washington and Lee baseball team concluded the ODAC portion of its 2011 schedule with a doubleheader split with Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at Cap’n Dick Smith Field. VWC won the opener, 7-4, and the Generals blanked the Marlins, 2-0, in the nightcap.

2011 Washington and Lee Baseball Season Preview
Baseball is very much a numbers-driven game. Coaches often pore over the most minute stats, seemingly insignificant details and the most obscure facts. Entering the 2011 season, Washington and Lee Head Baseball Coach Jeff Stickley is concerned with two sets of numbers. 4/491 and 22/12. Four is the number of infield starters that W&L lost to graduation and 491 is that group’s combined number of at- bats from last year alone. 22 is the number of underclassmen on the team, while the number 12 represents the team’s upperclassmen totals, including just two seniors.
