Numerous W&L Students Earn Scholar-Athlete Awards

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee
Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 179 students
earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed fall
term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams
and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.
Additionally, 18 of the students honored achieved grade-point
averages of 4.0 or higher (an A+ is worth 4.330 at W&L).
Among the students achieving a 4.0 or higher GPA's were senior
All-America swimmer Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee),
senior wrestler Sammy Brusca (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep),
sophomore wrestler Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), senior
rider Emily Coyle (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside), junior tennis player
Virginia Dickinson (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary's Episcopal), junior
cross country and track athlete David Doobin (Summit, N.J./Newark
Academy), junior All-ODAC tennis player Will Hall (Cape Elizabeth,
Maine/Cape Elizabeth), sophomore men's lacrosse player Jason Harden
(Summit, N.J./Delbarton), sophomore lacrosse player Alexis Harrison
(Rumson, N.J./Fumson-Fair Haven), senior volleyball player Kelly
Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School), junior All-ODAC and
Academic All-America football player Greg Kurkis (Roswell,
Ga./Westminster), junior All-ODAC field hockey and women's lacrosse
player Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr), first-year field
hockey player Katharine Price (Concord,
Mass./Concord-Carlisle), first-year All-ODAC and
All-Region cross country and track athlete Lauren Schultz
(Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton), sophomore baseball player Roger
Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit), senior All-America
swimmer Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy), senior All-ODAC
cross country and track athlete Dorothy Todd (Watkinsville,
Ga./Athens Academy) and first-year football player Sasha Vandalov
(Vienna, Va./James Madison).
Other notable athletes to receive Scholar-Athlete awards included

Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's), senior All-America
tennis player Lauren Caire (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall), senior
All-America lacrosse player Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman),
sophomore All-America soccer player Kat Lawson (White Post,
Va./Clarke County), sophomore All-America soccer player Emily Leary
(Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings), senior All-America volleyball player
Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep), sophomore All-America
swimmer Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery), senior
All-Region soccer player Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh,
Pa./Sewickley Academy), senior All-Region cross country runner and
track athlete Kat Telfeyan (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge),
sophomore All-America swimmer Chris Washnock (Greer,
S.C./Greenville) and first-year All-America tennis player Hayden
White (Baltimore, Md./Towson).

Twenty-one of W&L's 23 varsity athletic programs achieved a
team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the riding team with a
3.494. The highest men's team GPA was the swimming team with
a 3.481 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 2.720.
