W&L's Strong and Lewis Honored by ODAC
SALEM, Va. -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its
2010 baseball all-conference teams on Wednesday afternoon and
Washington and Lee had a pair of players honored.
Sophomore righthander Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid
Jesuit) was named to the all-conference second team, while senior
catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) was named to the
honorable mention squad.
A starting pitcher, Strong won his first four decisions of the
season en route to finishing with a 4-2 record on the year to tie
for the team lead in wins. He posted a 3.28 ERA in 10 starts and
was second on the team with 49.1 innings pitched. His 3.28 ERA was
good for sixth in the ODAC. For the season, he surrendered 23 runs
(18 earned) on 53 hits and 17 walks with 32 strikeouts, while
limiting opponents to just a .277 batting average-against. This is
the first all-conference citation of his career.
Lewis, who was a first team all-conference pick in 2008, led
the Generals with a .403 batting average (48-119) that was good for
10th in the conference. He also led W&L with nine
doubles and tied for second on the team with 23 RBIs. For his
career, Lewis finished third all-time at W&L in runs batted in
(102) and walks (66), while finishing fourth all-time in batting
average (.366) and hits (170).
Mike Marion of Virginia Wesleyan was tabbed as the ODAC Player of
the Year, while Kyle Hicks of Randolph-Macon was named the
conference’s Pitcher of the Year. Jeff Kinne of
Hampden-Sydney took home Coach of the Year honors, Brock Shiflett
of Lynchburg was named the league’s top rookie and Max
Axelrod of Virginia Wesleyan was the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance
Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Washington and Lee wrapped up its season last Sunday, falling to
Lynchburg College, 8-3, in the ODAC Tournament. W&L posted a
final record of 14-19.
