Numerous W&L Students Earn Winter Scholar-Athlete Awards
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee
Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 173 students
earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter
term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams
and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.
Additionally, 19 of the students honored achieved a 4.0
grade-point average, including senior All-ODAC lacrosse player
Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal), first-year track &
field athlete David Fishman (Westfield, N.J./Westfield), first-year
soccer player Gordon Glober (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton Prep),
senior basketball player Felice Herman (Fairfield, Pa./Delone
Catholic), junior cross country and track & field athlete
Kathryn Iwata (Pasadena, Calif./Flintridge Prep), senior Academic
All-America football player Greg Kurkis (Roswell, Ga./Westminster),
sophomore All-ODAC men's lacrosse player Joe LaSala (Wilton,
Conn./Wilton), junior All-America soccer player Emily Leary
(Cincinnati, Ohio/King's), senior All-ODAC and All-Region field
hockey and lacrosse player Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr),
junior All-ODAC rider Tamara Morse (Bristow, Va./Brentsville),
first-year rider Jillian O'Donnell (Dallas, Texas/Greenhill
School), sophomore women's soccer player Hannah Sackfield
(Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual), sophomore All-ODAC cross country
and track & field athlete Lauren Schultz (Hopkinton,
Mass./Hopkinton), first-year All-Bluegrass Mountain Conference
swimmer Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C./Asheville Christian
Academy), junior All-BMC swimmer Brian Stirling (Skillman,
N.J./Montgomery), first-year golfer Jake Struebing (Amherst,
N.Y./Amherst Central), sophomore All-BMC swimmer Rick Sykes
(Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley), sophomore football player Sasha
Vandalov (Vienna, Va./James Madison) and senior All-America swimmer
Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville).
Other notable athletes to receive the scholar-athlete award were

country and track & field athlete Rebecca Bryer (Chester,
Pa./Unionville), senior First Team All-ODAC golfer Tim Gavrich
(Avon, Conn./Westminster), junior First Team All-ODAC track &
field athlete Tyler Grant (Suwanee, Ga./South Forsyth), senior
First Team All-ODAC swimmer Tess Hayden (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier),
junior All-America soccer player Kat Lawson (White Post, Va./Clarke
County), senior First Team All-ODAC rider Allison Lemon (Roanoke,
Va./North Cross School), sophomore First Team All-BMC swimmer and
track & field athlete Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum),
sophomore First Team All-ODAC swimmer Delaney Rolfe (Dallas,
Texas/Highland Park), sophomore First Team All-ODAC baseball player

All but one of W&L's 23 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the riding team with a 3.701. The highest men's team GPA was the swimming team with a 3.371 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 2.995.
