W&L Women's Soccer Picked Second in ODAC Preseason Poll

SALEM, Va. -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2007 preseason women's soccer coaches poll on Wednesday afternoon and Washington and Lee was picked to finish second in the voting.

The Generals received five first-place votes and 133 points to narrowly trail Virginia Wesleyan, who took the top spot with seven first-place votes and 137 points. W&L and VWC met in the sectional final in 2006, with the Marlins advancing to the NCAA Division III Final Four on penalty kicks.

The remainder of the poll included Eastern Mennonite (106) and Lynchburg (106) tied for third, followed by Guilford (102), Roanoke (100), Randolph-Macon (69), Emory & Henry (57), Bridgewater (51), Randolph (29), Sweet Briar (24) and Hollins (22).

Washington and Lee finished last season with a 19-1-3 overall record, allowing just three goals all season in leading all NCAA Divisions in goals-against average (0.13). The Generals return 13 letterwinners and eight starters from last year's team, including the entire starting defense.

Senior defender Haley Bunting (Houston, Texas/St. John's ) and junior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) headline the returnees after earning First Team All-ODAC honors last fall. Bunting captained the defense and tallied four assists, while Van Devender posted a school-record 57 points for the season. Her 23 goals also tied the W&L season record, with seven of the scores serving as game-winners. She also added 11 assists and ranked 18th in Division III in points per game (2.59 ppg).

W&L opens its 2007 season by hosting the Generals' Classic on Sept. 8-9. W&L opens the tournament by playing Denison on Sat., Sept. 8 at 12:00 pm.
