A Total Of 178 W&L Students Earn Scholar-Athlete Awards

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 178 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

Additionally, 24 of the students honored achieved grade-point averages of 4.0 or higher (an A+ is worth 4.330 at W&L). Among the students achieving 4.0 or higher GPA's were sophomore swimmer Katie Boiles (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches), senior All-ODAC and All-Region cross country and track athlete Tom Brower (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy), senior soccer player Martha Caulkins (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass), sophomore rider Emily Coyle (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside), freshman cross country and track athlete Dave Doobin (Summit, N.J./Newark Academy), freshman soccer player Taylor Garrett (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), freshman cross country and track athlete Rob George (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South), freshman football player and ODAC Indoor Track & Field Rookie of the Year Jeff Giordano (Slidell, La./Jesuit), senior lacrosse player Allison Gockley (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy), senior cross country runner Alex Gould (Rocky Mount, N.C./Rocky Mount Academy), senior swimmer Will Hartmann (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy), freshman ODAC Football Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-ODAC honoree Greg Kurkis (Roswell, Ga./Westminster), senior swimming captain Colette Moryan (Westfield, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy), senior ODAC Swimming Scholar-Athlete of the Year Amy Roberson (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches), senior All-ODAC tennis player Tim Ross (Malvern, Pa./Conestoga), junior football player Andrew Sims (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep), junior All-ODAC and All-Region cross country and track athlete Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood), senior tennis player Rebecca Timmis (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh), senior swimmer Balam Tomlin (Greenville, S.C./Greenville), freshman volleyball player Meredith Townsend (Farmville, Va./Prince Edward County), sophomore basketball player Bena Tshishiku (Martinez, Ga./Lakeside), junior All-ODAC, All-Region and All-America soccer player Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall), junior All-ODAC and All-Region cross country and track athlete Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield School) and sophomore wrestler Russ Weems (Greenville, S.C./St. Joseph's Catholic).

Other notable athletes to receive Scholar-Athlete awards were senior basketball player and Division III Player of the Year finalist Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), junior All-America swimmers Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) and Chris Diebold (Platte City, Mo./Landsdale Catholic), senior All-America soccer player Josh Dodds (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar), senior All-America golfer Nathaniel James (Keller, Texas/Keller), ODAC Riding Rookie of the Year Allison Lemon (Roanoke, Va./North Cross), senior All-America swimmer Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro), senior All-America lacrosse player Kat Michaels (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy), junior ODAC Swimmer of the Year Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School), senior All-America swimmer and U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifier Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) and junior All-America tennis player Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina).

Twenty-two of W&L's 23 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the volleyball team with a 3.537. The highest men's team GPA was cross country with a 3.500 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 2.938.
