STERLING, Va. -- Washington and Lee senior forward Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) has been selected to the D3hoops.com Division III All-South Region men's basketball team, which was announced on Wednesday morning.
Bienemann was tabbed to the third team after averaging 21.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 0.9 assists per game this winter in earning First Team All-ODAC honors. He shot 59.2 percent (219-370) from the field and scored in double figures in 24 of the team's 26 games.
Bienemann notched 13 games of 20 or more points, including four 30-point outbursts, highlighted by a career-high 37 points on 17-of-19 shooting in a 98-81 win over Emory & Henry on Feb. 13. A three-time All-ODAC honoree, he finished his career with 1,573 points, good for sixth all-time at W&L.
Guilford senior center Ben Strong was named the South Region Player of the Year, Centre's Greg Mason was tabbed the Coach of the Year, while Ferrum's Derek Mitchell was selected as the Rookie of the Year. The ODAC was well represented on the teams as Strong was named to the first team, Virginia Wesleyan senior guard Ton Ton Balenga was tabbed to the second team and Bienemann and Virginia Wesleyan senior forward Tyler Fantin were voted to the third team.
Washington and Lee finished the 2007-08 season with a 15-11 overall record and an 11-7 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The 15 wins were the program's most since the 1989-90 season. The Generals earned the fifth seed for the conference tournament and fell to fourth-seeded Roanoke, 76-66.
