W&L SWIMMING EARNS ACADEMIC HONORS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) recently released its 2006 Spring Academic All-America Teams and both of Washington and Lee's programs were recognized for their academic achievements.

The Generals' men's and women's teams were cited as Academic All-America teams after posting team grade-point averages (GPA) in excess of the minimum 2.80. The men tied for seventh in the nation with a GPA of 3.33, while the women totaled a 3.43 GPA to finish tied for 18th in the nation.

Rising junior Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) and rising sophomore Chris Diebold (Platte City, Mo./Lansdale Catholic) garnered First Team Academic All-America honors, while recent graduate Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) and rising senior Kevin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) were named Honorable Mention Academic All-American.

McGlaston competed at the 2006 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships and completed the spring semester with a GPA in excess of 3.5 to earn a place on the First Team Academic All-America squad. In the pool, he received Honorable Mention All-America honors as a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay team and earned First Team All-Bluegrass Mountain Conference honors for the second straight season. Individually, McGlaston also recorded an NCAA "B" cut time in the 50-yard freestyle.

Diebold, a neuroscience major with a GPA exceeding 3.5, competed at the 2006 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships as member of the Generals' 800 free relay. An all-conference selection as a freshman, he was also a component of the 400 free relay team that placed first at Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship meet.

Barrineau was named to the Honorable Mention team after posting a GPA higher than 3.5 and earning NCAA "B" cut times in the mile and 1650 freestyle. He captured First Team All-Bluegrass Mountain Conference honors for the third consecutive year. Barrineau also owned the team-best time in the 1000 freestyle for the 2005-06 season.

A two-time All-Bluegrass Mountain Conference selection, Hayes earned Honorable Mention honors with a GPA topping 3.5. He won a pair of events in NCAA "B" cut times and set a school record at the BMC championship meet. He captured the 200-yard IM (1:55.57) and 400-yard IM in a school-record time of 4:08.38 at the conference championships.

The Washington and Lee men's team finished the season with a 6-1 overall record and a No. 20 national ranking. The W&L women notched a 10-5 overall record (6-0 ODAC) and won their 13th consecutive ODAC Championships.
