LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee rising senior tennis player Emily Applegate (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) is featured in the July 17 issue of Sports Illustrated. Applegate is profiled in the magazine's "Faces in the Crowd" section.

The issue, which appeared at newstands on Thursday, features the New York Mets on the cover.

Applegate is featured in the magazine following a spring that saw her claim the NCAA Division III singles championship. She posted a 33-3 singles record and a 26-7 doubles mark during the 2006 season and claimed First Team All-America honors in both singles and doubles.

The 2006 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Applegate won the ITA Southeast Region singles and doubles championships during the fall season and finished fourth in doubles and sixth in singles at the ITA National Championships.

Applegate is a two-year letterwinner at W&L after playing her freshman year at the University of Richmond. She has notched a 48-4 record in singles and a 43-10 mark in doubles during her two seasons with the Generals and has claimed All-America honors three times.

Applegate is the fourth Washington and Lee athlete to be featured in the magazine since 1999. All-America volleyball player Emily Wolfing '05 appeared in the November 8, 2004 edition of faces in the crowd, while All-America lacrosse player Matt Dugan '01 was featured in the March 19, 2001 edition and All-America swimmer Margaret Hoehl '99 appeared in the same section of the March 1, 1999 edition.
