SALEM, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s basketball team was picked to finish ninth out of 10 teams in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll which was released on Thursday afternoon at the conference’s media day.
Two-time defending conference champion and 2006 Division III National Champion Virginia Wesleyan sits atop the poll after receiving nine first-place votes and 98 points. Hampden-Sydney received one first-place vote and resides in second place with 89 points. The Tigers are followed by Randolph-Macon (81), Guilford (70), Emory & Henry (52), Roanoke (52), Eastern Mennonite (35), Bridgewater (32), Washington and Lee (28) and Lynchburg (13).
The Generals return all five starters and 12 letterwinners for the 2006-07 season. Leading the way will be junior forward Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), who earned Honorable Mention All-ODAC honors last season after averaging a team-best 12.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
Joining Bienemann in the returning starting lineup are senior guard Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, Fla./Ridgewood), senior forward Alex White (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh), junior forward John Mumper (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) and sophomore guard Isaiah Goodman (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels). Junior forward Femi Kusimo (Cross Lanes, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) also comes back after starting 10 contests sandwiched around a foot injury that forced him to miss nine games.
W&L opens its season on Nov. 17-18 as it hosts the W&L Tip-off Tournament. The Generals will play Denison in the first round on Nov. 17 at 8:00 pm.
