HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its preseason football poll at the conference’s football media day on Friday, July 29 on the campus of Hampden-Sydney College.
Washington and Lee was picked to finish fourth overall out of the league’s seven football playing institutions in voting conducted by the conference’s coaches.
Bridgewater received the most first place votes and are the favorite to win the conference title for a fifth straight season.
Hampden-Sydney was picked to finish second followed by Emory & Henry, W&L, Randolph-Macon, Guilford and Catholic.
The Generals finished the 2004 campaign with a 6-4 overall record and finished third in the conference with a 4-2 ODAC mark.
W&L returns 15 starters from last season, including 10 players that started on the defense at one point during the year. They helped lead a Generals' defense which ranked second nationally in rushing defense (67.5 ypg.), 22nd in total defense (263.6 ypg.), 26th in scoring defense (15.7 ppg.) and 44th in turnover margin (+0.7 topg.). Additionally, W&L set a school record with 43 sacks and pitched three shutouts during the season.
On offense, the Generals return senior quarterback Greg Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and junior wide receiver Colton Ward (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) and five other starters. Tweardy passed for 1,897 yards and 11 touchdowns, and set school records for completions (210) and attempts (346) last season. Ward earned First Team All-ODAC accolades after compiling 1,050 all-purpose yards and nine touchdowns in eight games.
Washington and Lee opens its season on September 10 as it hosts Alfred University for a 1:00 pm contest.
