W&L PLACES 15 SWIMMERS ON ALL-BMC MEN'S SWIMMING TEAM

LEXINGTON, Va. -- After capturing their third consecutive Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship, the Washington and Lee men's swimming team had 15 swimmers named First Team All-BMC. Additionally, Head Coach Joel Shinofield earned BMC Coach of the Year accolades for the third straight season.

The two all-conference seniors were Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) and Reed Evans (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day). W&L's five juniors were Ben Accinelli (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead), Dave Croushore (Glen Allen, Va./North Penn), Mike Ginder (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal), Kevin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) and Maxwell Pike (Goldsboro, N.C./Wayne Country Day). The quintet of sophomores were Evan Fitzgerald (Southern Pines, N.C./Oneal School), Will Hartmann (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy), Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro), Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) and Homer Winter (Charlottesville, Va./Mercersburg Academy). W&L also had three freshmen honored in Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell), Chris Diebold (Platte City, Mo./Lansdale Catholic), and Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./George Walton).

Hayes won a pair of events in NCAA "B" cut times and set a school record at the BMC championship meet. He captured the 200-yard IM (1:55.57) and 400-yard IM in a school-record time of 4:08.38. Hayes also placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.13).

Ginder won the 200-yard backstroke in an NCAA "A" cut, meet and school-record time of 1:50.61, while finishing second in both the 50-yard freestyle (21.53) and the 100-yard backstroke in an NCAA "B" cut time of 51.34.

Crook won the 200-yard freestyle in an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:42.65 and placed second in the 500-yard freestyle in an NCAA "B" cut time of 4:41.20, while Barrineau won the 1000-yard freestyle in an NCAA "B" cut and school-record time of 9:43.37.

McGlaston captured the 50-yard freestyle in an NCAA "B" cut time of 21.21 and was second in the 100-yard freestyle in an NCAA "B" cut time of 46.91. Sweet captured the 100-yard freestyle in an NCAA "B" cut time of 46.69, while Tatman won the 1650-yard freestyle (16:28.34) and placed third in the 500-yard freestyle in an NCAA "B" cut time of 4:42.52.

The Generals also won three relay races. The foursome of McGlaston, Evans, Sweet and Ginder captured the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:23.75), Sweet, Hayes, Ginder and McGlaston won the 200-yard medley relay (1:35.37) and McGlaston, Pike, Diebold and Sweet touched the wall first in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:10.37).

Washington and Lee finished the season with a 6-1 overall record and a No. 20 national ranking. The Generals will also have several swimmers participate in the NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships from Thu., Mar. 16-Sat., Mar. 18.
