SKILLMAN, N.J. -- The U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) presented their Campus Recreation and Community Service Awards during the 19th annual ITA Coaches Convention on Dec. 12-15 in Miami. Washington and Lee Head Men's Tennis Coach David Detwiler received the USTA/ITA Community Service Award for the Mid-Atlantic Region at the proceedings.
The USTA/ITA Community Service Award honors an ITA coach for significant contributions in developing community-based tennis programs through community centers, schools, parks, community tennis associations, inner city, suburban or rural programs.
As director of Washington and Lee's Duchossois Tennis Center, Detwiler has been vital to providing tennis instruction to the Washington and Lee and Lexington communities since the facility's opening in the winter of 1997.
Detwiler is in his fourth year as men's tennis coach after three seasons as an assistant coach with the Generals' women's tennis program. His first three seasons as coach of the men's team have resulted in three ODAC Championships, three trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament and a 41-15 overall record.
Before arriving at W&L, Detwiler spent eight years as the Tennis Director at Shadow Oaks Racquet Club in Greenville, S.C.
Greg Patton of Boise State University was the national recipient of the USTA/ITA Community Service Award, while University of Delaware men's and women's coach Laura Travis received the national USTA/ITA Campus Recreation Award.
