TWO GENERALS NAMED TO FOOTBALL GAZETTE PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN TEAM
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee junior offensive lineman Mat Rapoza (Kill Devil Hills, N.C./Manteo) and senior tailback Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) were both named to the 2001 Football Gazette NCAA Division III Preseason All-American team. Rapoza garnered first team honors, while Watson was named to the second team.
Rapoza transferred to Washington and Lee from Swarthmore College following its decision to drop football after the 2000 season. Last season, Rapoza earned First Team All-Centennial Conference and Second Team All-America honors after blocking for the Garnet Tide's first-ever 1,000-yard back.
Watson, who decided to return for a fifth year, will need just 590 yards to break the W&L career rushing record. Injuries have limited Watson to just 22 career games, but he has still managed to rush for 2,482 career yards.
Last season, in being named the ODAC Player of the Year, First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-State and Second Team All-South Region, Watson rushed for a W&L single season record 1,325 yards and 12 touchdowns. In weeks six and seven, Watson ran for 281 and 262 yards, respectively, the top two single game rushing totals in W&L history. He also set a W&L record with 1,997 all-purpose yards, placing him fourth in Division III last season.
Washington and Lee will open its 2001 season by traveling to Johns Hopkins on September 8 for a 12:00 pm kick-off.
