W&L WOMEN'S TENNIS ADVANCES TO NCAA TOURNAMENT
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's tennis team was
awarded the third seed for the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis
Tournament to be held at Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Va.
from Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 19.
The Generals will face sixth-seeded Pomona-Pitzer (15-7) on Friday
at 1:00 pm. Earlier this season, W&L (20-2) defeated the
Sagehens, 6-0, on March 31 in the Fab Five Tournament at W&L.
The winner of the match will take on the winner of the No. 2
Emory/No. 7 Amherst match in the national semifinals on Saturday at
1:00 pm.
In addition, W&L junior Erika Proko (Charlotte,
N.C./Providence Day) and freshman Lindsay Hagerman (Dallas,
Texas/Highland Park) have been selected to compete in the
individual competition. Proko was also chosen to participate in
doubles along with her partner, senior Melissa Hatley (Columbia,
S.C./Heathwood Hall). The singles and doubles tournaments will take
place from May 20-22, at Sweet Briar.
Proko has compiled a singles record of 17-5 this season, while
Hagerman has posted a 22-4 mark and was recently named the Atlantic
South Region Rookie of the Year. The team of Proko and Hatley have
logged a record of 24-2 this season. A year ago, the duo fell in
the first round of the national tournament, while Proko earned
All-America honors in singles play after advancing to the
quarterfinal round.
