LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee claimed six players on the College Lacrosse USA Division III lacrosse All-America team. The Generals' six players were the most of any school.
This is the first year that College Lacrosse USA has announced an All-America team. Seven W&L players were named to last week's USILA/STX Division III All-America team.
Highlighting W&L's selections to the All-America team was junior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's), who earned First Team honors. Junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and junior defenseman Pete Iwancio (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) were both Second Team selections, while senior defenseman Charlie Antrim (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's), senior attackman Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson), and junior goalie Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola) were Honorable Mention picks.
Hackney earned his selection by scoring 49 points on 31 goals and 18 assists. He also claimed 67 ground balls, third on the team, and won 63.5 percent of his faceoffs. Hackney is also a two-time First Team All-ODAC pick. He earned First Team USILA All-America honors last week and was a Third Team All-America selection last season.
Dugan garnered his honor after breaking the W&L single-season scoring record with 87 points on 55 goals and 32 assists. He will enter his senior season as W&L's second-leading career scorer with 227 points, just seven points from the top spot. Dugan is a two-time First Team All-ODAC selection who earned First Team All-America honors by the USILA. He was a Second Team USILA All-American last season.
Iwancio helped anchor a defense that allowed just 5.78 goals per game, third-best in Division III. He is a two-time First Team All-ODAC selection, who earned Third Team USILA All-American honors last week. He was also a Third Team USILA All-America selection last season.
Antrim, a two-time First team All-ODAC selection, teamed with Iwancio on the defense. He earned Third Team All-American honors from the USILA this season and Honorable Mention honors last season.
Brown was second on the team in scoring with 70 points on 48 goals and 22 assists. He ends his career 13th all-time at W&L in scoring with 151 career points. Brown is a two-time First Team All-ODAC selection. He earned Honorable Mention All-American honors from the USILA as well.
Hays finished his season with a .607 save percentage and 5.85 goals-against average, both career-highs. He earned Second Team All-ODAC honors for the 2000 season.
W&L finished the 2000 season with a 16-2 overall record and a No. 4 national ranking. The Generals set a new school record for victories and advanced the the NCAA Semifinals where they were defeated by Salisbury State, 10-9. It was W&L's first trip to the semis since 1987.
