SEVEN GENERALS EARN USILA/STX ALL-AMERICA HONORS

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee claimed seven players on the USILA/STX Division III lacrosse All-America team. The Generals' seven players were second only to Nazareth's nine.

Highlighting W&L's selections to the All-America team were a pair of juniors in attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's). Both earned First Team honors, W&L's first selections to the first team since Bob Clements in 1980.

Senior defenseman Charlie Antrim (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) and junior defenseman Pete Iwancio (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) were named to the third team, while senior attackmen Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson) and Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) and junior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) were selected to the honorable mention team.

Dugan garnered his honor after breaking the W&L single-season scoring record with 87 points on 55 goals and 32 assists. He will enter his senior season as W&L's second-leading career scorer with 227 points, just seven points from the top spot. Dugan is a two-time First Team All-ODAC selection and earned Second Team All-America honors last season.

Hackney earned his selection by scoring 49 points on 31 goals and 18 assists. He also claimed 67 ground balls, third on the team, and won 63.5 percent of his faceoffs. Hackney is also a two-time First Team All-ODAC pick and posted Third Team All-America honors last season.

Antrim and Iwancio anchored a defense that allowed just 5.78 goals per game, third-best in Division III. Antrim gathered 47 ground balls, while Iwancio scooped up 39 ground balls. Both are two-time First Team All-ODAC selections. Iwancio earned Third Team and Antrim posted Honorable Mention All-America honors last season.

Brown was second on the team in scoring with 70 points on 48 goals and 22 assists. He was followed closely by Dougherty, who posted 63 points on 29 goals and 34 assists. Both finish their careers among W&L's top scorers in history. Dougherty is third all-time with 224 career points and Brown is 13th all-time with 151 career points. Dougherty earned First Team All-ODAC and Honorable Mention All-America honors as a sophomore and has been a Second Team All-ODAC selection each of the past two seasons. Brown is a two-time First Team All-ODAC pick.

Norton was fifth on the team in scoring after notching 46 points on 29 goals and 17 assists. He is a two-time Second Team All-ODAC honoree.

W&L finished the 2000 season with a 16-2 overall record and a No. 4 national ranking. The Generals set a new school record for victories and advanced the the NCAA Division III Tournament Semifinals where they were defeated by top-ranked Salisbury State, 10-9. It was W&L's first trip to the semifinals since the 1987 season. The Generals will return four of their All-Americans next season.
