LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Mike Walsh has announced that 100 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed fall term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.
Additionally, 16 of the students honored achieved grade point averages of 4.0 or higher (an A+ is worth 4.330 at W&L). Among the students achieving 4.0 or higher GPA's were sophomore swimmer Richard Black (Indiana, Pa./Marion Center), senior swimming captain James Browne (Ontario, Canada/University of Toronto), sophomore volleyball player Sara Heusel (Novi, Mich./Novi), sophomore football player Stephen Hostetler (Bath, Pa./Northampton), sophomore swimmer Anne Lachiewicz (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill), freshman football player John Melillo (Wichita, Kan./Belle Plaine), senior soccer player Jason Miller (Boone, N.C./Watauga), junior swimmer Mike Miraglia (Rockville, Md./Rockville), senior track athlete Jason Nichols (Austin, Texas/Westlake), senior track athlete Roshni Nirody (Edison, N.J./John P. Stevens), senior volleyball player Nancy Reinhart (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart), junior football player and wrestler John Sensing (Hockessin, Del./Tutnall), junior women's lacrosse player Jennifer Strawbridge (Houston, Texas/Westfield), freshman basketball player Liz Townsend (Farmville, Va./Prince Edward), senior equestrian Meredith Welch (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights), and senior football player Doug Williams (Rome, Ga./Darlington).
Other notable athletes to receive Scholar-Athlete awards included senior All-ODAC women's swimmer Lauren Beckenhauer (Grosse Point, Mich./Grosse Point South), senior All-ODAC men's lacrosse player Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson), senior All-ODAC cross country runner Ashley Davis (Houston, Texas/Mirabeau B. Lamar), senior All-ODAC football player J.T. Malatesta (Washington, D.C./Landon), sophomore All-ODAC cross country runner Ken Jackman (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo), senior four-time All-ODAC and All-State soccer player Jamie Parker (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland), freshman All-ODAC football player Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights), and senior All-ODAC soccer player Ben Thompson (Bozman, Md./Newark (Del.)).
Sixteen of W&L's 22 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the women's outdoor track team with a 3.351. The highest men's team GPA was the men's outdoor track team with a 3.264 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 2.767.
W&L had an outstanding fall season on the playing fields as well. W&L's seven fall sports teams combined for a record of 49-27 (.645) with women's volleyball and women's cross country claiming ODAC Championships.
