has announced the appointment of Todd Peters as head water polo and
assistant swim coach.

slated to receive the Most Distinguised Athletic Trainer Award from

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee junior rightfielder Christian
Batcheller (Stuart, Va./Patrick County), who was selected in the

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Mikel Parker (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and Karin
Treese (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) headed the list of honorees
at the annual Washington and Lee University Athletic Awards
Ceremony on May 25 at W&L's Lee Chapel. Parker and Treese were
named the Pres Brown Outstanding Senior Male and Female athletes,
respectively.
Baseball's Sigler Named All-South Region
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee sophomore pitcher David
Sigler (Strasburg, Pa./ Lampter-Strasburg) was named Second Team
All- South Region on Monday by the American Baseball Coaches

W&L'S BURRICE TO COMPETE IN NCAA DIV. III GOLF
CHAMPIONSHIP
LEXINGTON, Va. -- W&L senior golfer Rick Burrice (Louisville,
Ky./Trinity) has been chosen to compete as an individual in the
NCAA Division III Golf Championships to be held May 17-20 at the
Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Mass.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team has
earned a bye and home field advantage through the quarter and
semifinals of the NCAA Tournament in an announcement made Sunday
afternoon by the NCAA.
W&L'S DUGAN NAMED ODAC MEN'S LAX PLAYER OF THE
YEAR
SALEM, Va. -- Washington and Lee dominated the Old Dominion
Athletic Conference men's lacrosse postseason honors as seven
Generals were named first or second team all-conference. Sophomore
attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) was named the
ODAC Player of the Year and Jim Stagnitta was tabbed as the Coach
of the Year.
HATLEY AND HARTZELL HONORED BY ITA
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee women's tennis players Brook
Hartzell (Palo Alto, Calif./ Branson School) and Melissa Hatley
(Columbia, S.C./ Heathwood Hall) have been honored by the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association for their tremendous 1999
campaigns. Hartzell, a junior, received the Arthur Ashe
Sportsmanship/ Leadership Award, representing the south region.
Also representing the south region, Hatley was named Rookie of the
Year.
STICKLEY NAMED ODAC BASEBALL COACH OF THE
YEAR
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee head baseball coach Jeff
Stickley was named the 1999 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Coach
of the Year, while four of his players were named to the All-ODAC
team. Senior second baseman Patrick Hall (Houston, Tex./ Episcopal)
and sophomore pitcher David Sigler (Strasburg, Pa./ Lampeter -
Strasburg) were named to the first team. Senior catcher E.J. Murphy
(Glenside, Pa./ Chestnut Hill Academy) and junior shortstop David
Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./ Pace Academy) were named to the second
team.

Four W&L Women's Lax Players Named
All-ODAC
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team was
honored on Thursday as four Generals were named to the All-Old
Dominion Athletic Conference team. Senior defenders Kimmy Lubin
(Wimington Del./ Lawrenceville) and Cory Mettee (Baltimore, Md./
Notre Dame Prep) were named to the conference's first team. Senior
midfielder Lauren Francis (Chester Springs, Pa./ Downingtown) and
junior attack Katherine Riddle (St. Clair Shores, Mich./ University
- Liggett) were named to the second team.
W&L Men's Lacrosse Tied For No. 1 in Division
III
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team is
tied for No. 1 in Division III in the lastest STX/USILA Division
III National Coaches' Poll.
WASHINGTON AND LEE WOMEN'S TENNIS TEAM REACHES NCAA
TOURNAMENT
LEXINGTON -- The Washington and Lee women's tennis team (16-4,
11-0 ODAC) has been selected to participate in the NCAA Tournament
for the sixth consecutive season and for the seventh time in nine
years. The Generals will face Kenyon College in the tournament's
first round on Tuesday, May 4 at The College of New Jersey in
Trenton, N.J. W&L defeated Kenyon, 5-4, in Lexington on March
12. The team championship will run through Friday, May 7.
SEVENTY-SIX W&L STUDENTS EARN SCHOLAR-ATHLETE
AWARDS
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Mike
Walsh has announced that 76 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards
during the recently completed winter term. The students are all
members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade point
average (GPA) of at least 3.500.
W&L TO OPEN NEW BASEBALL STADIUM

Lee will unveil its new Cap'n Dick Smith Baseball Field when it

W&L ANNOUNCES 1999 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
INDUCTEES
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee has announced the 12th class
that will be inducted into its Athletic Hall of Fame in a ceremony
to be held on campus on Friday, Sept. 24. The group will also be
honored prior to the Generals' football game against Centre College
on Saturday, Sept. 25. This year's class includes Rob Lindsay '76,
Jim Lukens '48L, Elizabeth Miles Mitzlaff '89, and "Bullet" Joe
Silverstein '22.

W&L's MENTZ AND BURGHARDT EARN ALL-ODAC
HONORS
SALEM, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's basketball team was
honored on Wednesday evening when freshman center Jessica Mentz
(Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) was named the Old Dominion Athletic
Conference Rookie of the Year. She also garnered second team
All-ODAC honors. Senior forward Chrissy Burghardt (Rockaway,
N.J./Morris Hills) earned honorable mention honors. Mentz was the
first rookie of the year and first or second team all-league member
in the history of the program.
Four W&L Swimming's Hoehl and Jacobs Moore
Honored by ODAC and Atlantic States
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee womenUs swimming program
was honored at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference/ Atlantic
States meet this weekend as senior Margaret Hoehl (Tullahoma,
Tenn./ Tullahoma) was named the ODAC/ Atlantic States Swimmer of
the Year and head coach Kiki Jacobs Moore was named ODAC Coach of
the Year. Hoehl broke three meet and school records this weekend,
finishing in first place in all events. She timed 5:09.25 in the
500 freestyle event and 1:57.36 in the 200 freestyle event. Hoehl
finished up her trifecta of first place finishes with a time of
17:46.18. Hoehl made RBS cuts for all three events for the NCAA
meet, which will occur in Oxford, Ohio. The meet will run March
11-13. This is the second straight honor Hoehl, who has been named
All-ODAC in each of her four years at W&L.
Four W&L Women's Lax Ranked Sixth by College
Lacrosse USA
LEXINGTON, VA. -- College Lacrosse USA has ranked Washington and
Lee's women's lacrosse team sixth in the nation in its 1999
preseason poll. The Generals finished last season with a 13-3
record and as Old Dominion Athletic Conference champions. W&L
also made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since
1993.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The spring season is just around the corner and
the preseason accolades for the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse
program are already rolling in. W&L is ranked seventh in the
preseason rankings by Faceoff '99 Men's College Lacrosse
Yearbook and three Generals are cited as preseason
All-Americans in the publication.

All-Americans
LEXINGTON, VA. -- Washington and Lee's women's lacrosse team has
been honored with four players being named to College Lacrosse
USA's preseason All-America Team. Each of the honorees were named
to the honorable mention team. The Generals are defending champions
of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Last season, they posted a
record of 13-3 and 8-0 in the ODAC.

WINCHESTER, Va. -- W&L senior back Mikel Parker (Marietta,
Ga./Walton) continued to rack- up the post season honors on Monday
when he was named the Virginia College Division Men's Soccer Player

safe. Most recently, freshman outside hitter Lee Charbonnet (New
Orleans, La./Benjamin Franklin) set two new W&L marks in the
championship game of the Goucher Invitational on October 17.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- At the annual Old Dominion Athletic
Conference football media day held Friday afternoon on the campus
of Hampden-Sydney, the league's preseason poll was announced.
Washington & Lee was picked to finish fourth overall of the
league's six football member schools in voting conducted by the
league's coaches.

W&L Wrestling Accpets Bid To The Centennial
Conference
In an announcement made today, Washington and Lee University has
accepted a provisional associate membership to the Centennial
Conference for the sport of Wrestling after competing as an
independent for the past 17 years.
W&L Women's Tennis Receives ITA All-Academic
Award
Princeton, N.J. -- For the second-straight year, the Washington
and Lee University women's tennis team earned All-Academic Team
honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
W&L Names McCabe Assistant Football and
Assistant Lacrosse Coach
LEXINGTON, VA -- Washington and Lee University has named Eugene
McCabe it's new assistant football and men's lacrosse coach. He
will work with the running backs on the gridiron and midfielders on
the lacrosse field.
Laubscher Named S.I.D. at W&L
Washington and Lee University has named Brian Laubscher as its new
sports information director. Laubscher will oversee the publicity
efforts for Washington and Lee's 21-sport NCAA Division III
athletic program and will begin his duties immediately.
