W&L Names Chip Whipple Assistant Sports Information Director
LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee University has announced that Chip Whipple has been appointed as the school’s assistant sports information director.
“I’m elated to have Chip join the sports information department,” said Sports Information Director Brian Laubscher. “He has terrific credentials and I know that his experience will only enhance what we are already doing to provide coverage of our teams and individual athletes.”
Whipple comes to W&L from Dartmouth College, where he served as an athletic communications intern for the last two years. In this role, he was responsible for working with a variety of the school’s 34 varsity athletic teams, including serving as the primary contact for 18 sports.
"I'm thrilled to join the talented and well-respected staff at Washington and Lee University," said Whipple. "From the student-athletes to the faculty, staff and coaches, this University represents what is most desired in intercollegiate athletics. I am grateful to Brian Laubscher, Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn and the rest of the search committee for the opportunity they have offered me."
Whipple also served as a graduate assistant sports information director at Ashland University from 2008-10, working with the school’s 20 varsity athletic teams and earning a master of education in sport education.
A 2004 graduate of Ashland with a bachelor of arts in sport communication and journalism, Whipple spent four years as a student assistant with the sports information department and he completed internships with the Lake County News Herald in Willoughby, Ohio and WJET-TV in Erie, Pa.
Whipple will serve as the primary media contact for several of W&L's athletic teams and will be responsible for recording statistics, producing news releases, creating a variety of printed materials and maintenance of the University’s athletics webpages while assisting with the promotion of the athletic department.
