Dave Leunig '80
Dave Leunig was one of Washington and Lee’s top two-sport
athletes of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.
Leunig was a four-year letterwinner for both the golf and
basketball teams, serving as the golf team captain during his
senior season.
In golf, Leunig was a First Team All-ODAC selection each of his
final three seasons and the ODAC Golfer of the Year during his
sophomore and senior seasons. He won the ODAC Championship as a
sophomore and finished third at the ODAC Championships during his
final two seasons. Leunig led the Generals to the ODAC team title
in each of his first two seasons.
In basketball, Leunig earned a pair of Second Team All-ODAC
citations while leading the Generals to three ODAC titles.
Additionally, he helped guide W&L to NCAA Tournament berths in
1977 and 1978 and earned Second Team NCAA All-Regional honors in
1978.
Leunig finished his career with 1,005 career points, entering the
athletic hall of fame as one of 20 W&L players with over 1,000
career points.
Leunig’s career was recognized following his senior year
when he was named the W&L Outstanding Senior Male Athlete in
1979.
