Serving as head football coach from 1978 until his passing in the spring of 1995, Gary Fallon made his mark on the Washington and Lee athletic program as a man of character and courage.
A three-sport athlete at Syracuse University from 1958-61, Fallon helped lead the Orangemen football team to the 1959 National Championship and an appearance in the 1961 Liberty Bowl.
At W&L, he is the winningest football coach in school history having posted a 76-83-1 overall record. Fallon’s teams showed almost immediate improvement, graduating from two wins during his first season in 1978 to an 8-2 record and an ODAC Championship during the 1981 campaign.
That year would be the first in a school-record stretch of six consecutive winning seasons capped by another ODAC title in 1985. The ODAC Coach of the Year in 1981, 88 and 92, Fallon posted 11 seasons of .500 or better ball during his 17 years.
Under his tutelage, 68 players earned All-ODAC honors while countless others garnered Academic All-District honors.
