Nancy Mitchell Hatcher was an instrumental figure in the early development of the Washington and Lee women’s soccer program.
Mitchell Hatcher was a four-year letterwinner and four-year starter at defender, serving as a team captain during her senior campaign.
Mitchell Hatcher’s impact on the soccer program was evident from the very start as she was named the W&L Freshman Female Athlete of the Year in 1989. She helped a fledgling program improve from 44 goals allowed as a freshman to just 14 goals allowed and an ODAC regular season championship as a senior.
She was named the team’s outstanding defensive player her first three seasons and was a four-time First Team All-ODAC selection. She entered the hall of fame as W&L’s only ODAC Player of the Year in women’s soccer, an award she achieved as a senior. A second team all-south pick as a junior, she also garnered first team all-state honors during her senior season.
All told, Mitchell Hatcher helped the women’s soccer program to a 31-27-5 overall record and an appearance in the 1990 ODAC Championship game.
