The 1950 Football Team

One of the greatest teams in W&L's athletic history was the 1950 Football team that won the Southern Conference, advanced to the 1951 Gator Bowl, and finished the season ranked 18th in the country.

The Generals posted an 8-3 overall record and finished atop the Southern Conference standings with a perfect 6-0 conference slate. Following the regular-season, W&L played in its only postseason bowl game in school history, dropping a 20-7 decision to Wyoming. W&L was without the services of star halfback Walt Michaels.

The Generals breezed through the season's competition, dropping games only to Virginia, 26-21, and Tennessee, 27-20, during the regular season. W&L outscored its opponents 325-140 and allowed seven points or less to an opponent in six of its 11 contests.

Along the way, several individuals were honored for the season. Head Coach George Barclay was selected as the Southern Conference and Virginia Coach of the Year, while quarterback Gil Bocetti '51 was named All-State, All-Southern Conference and Outstanding Player in the State of Virginia. Michaels '51, Joe McCutcheon '51, Don Fergusson '51, and Buck Conard '53 each earned All-State honors.
