Numerous W&L Students Earn Fall Scholar-Athlete Awards

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 166 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed fall term.  The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.50.

Additionally, 22 of the students honored achieved grade-point averages of 4.0.  Among the students achieving a 4.0 GPA were senior lacrosse player Lauren Acker (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Seaholm), senior Academic All-America wrestler Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), senior rider Camille Cobb (Huntersville, N.C./Harding University), junior soccer player Ainsley Daigle (Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana), sophomore cross country and track & field athlete Katie Driest (Davidson, N.C./North Mecklenburg), senior baseball player Joe Gannett (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep), senior swimming captain Brad Harder (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow), first-year tennis player Christopher Hu (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), sophomore track & field and cross country runner Brandie Huffman (Warrenton,Va./Fauquier), senior baseball player Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond), senior All-America soccer player Kat Lawson (White Post, Va./Clarke County), sophomore cross country and track & field athlete Annelise Madison (Roca, Neb./Norris), junior all-conference swimmer Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School), senior All-ODAC rider Tamara Morse (Bristow, Va./Brentsville), junior swimmer Kelly Mae Ross (Endicott, N.Y./Maine-Endwell), sophomore all-conference swimmer Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C./Asheville Christian Academy), senior track & field captain Natalie Stier (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton), senior All-ODAC pitcher Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit), first-year cross country and track & field athlete Scott Sugden (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial), junior all-conference swimmer Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley), senior All-America swimming captain Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) and junior pitcher Eric Wisotsky (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro North).

Other notable athletes to receive Scholar-Athlete awards included first-year all-region soccer player Holley Beasley (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy), senior all-region lacrosse and field hockey player Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross), sophomore all-region volleyball player M.A. Boles (Houston, Texas/St. John's), senior All-America basketball player Becca Bolton (Pittsboro, N.C./Chatham Central), senior All-America soccer player Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/King's), senior All-America tennis player Lauren Lukas (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln), junior all-region and Academic All-America football player Brett Murray (Lookout Mountain, Tenn./Baylor), junior all-region cross country runner Lauren Schultz (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton), senior football player Charlie Westfal (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), who was named the state player of the year, and junior All-America tennis player Hayden White (Baltimore, Md./Towson).

Twenty-two of W&L's 24 varsity athletic programs (including women's golf) achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the women's cross country team with a 3.504.  The three members of the developmental varsity women's golf team combined to post a 3.838 team GPA.

The highest men's team GPA was the swimming team with a 3.413 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 2.831.  Together, the fall sports teams combined to post a 62-29-6 (.670) overall record.
