RANKIN EARNS USTA/ITA COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

SKILLMAN, N.J. -- The United States Tennis Association, Intercollegiate Tennis Association (USTA/ITA) recently announced its Community Service Awards and Washington and Lee women's tennis Head Coach Cinda Rankin was named a sectional winner.

Rankin is actively involved with the tennis community and the Rockbridge Tennis Association (RTA), which has significantly increased the interest in adult and junior tennis in Rockbridge County. She served as Tournament Director for the 2006 RTA Championships and has provided clinics at the local high school and around the community.

Additionally, Rankin has supervised the involvement of the women's tennis team in several community and campus service initiatives, including the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's Annual Food Drive and the upcoming Turkeypalooza sponsored by W&L's Campus Kitchen. The team will help prepare Thanksgiving-themed meals to deliver to needy families and organizations throughout Rockbridge County.

In her 18th year as a head coach at W&L, Rankin has compiled an enviable record of 358-56 and led the Generals to 13 straight NCAA Division III top six finishes, including national runner-up finishes in 1996, 2003, 2005 and 2006. She was named the ITA National Coach of the Year in 1995 when she led the Generals to a third place finish at nationals and in both 1996 and 2005 when W&L finished as the runner-up. Additionally, Rankin has led W&L to 16 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships and has been named the ODAC Coach of the Year 10 times.

The USTA/ITA Community Service Award honors ITA coaches for significant contributions in developing community-based tennis programs through community centers, schools, parks, community tennis associations, inner city, suburban or rural programs. This awards program, which began in 2003, was open to over 2,000 ITA head and assistant coaches at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College levels.
