W&L SWEEPS OLD DOMINION ATHLETIC CONFERENCE MAJOR AWARDS
SALEM, Va. -- Washington and Lee University swept the Old Dominion Athletic Conference major awards by claiming the Commissioner's Cup for overall excellence and the “Doc” Jopson and Majorie Berkley awards presented to the outstanding male and female scholar-athletes of the year.
W&L won the overall commissioner's cup and also claimed the men's and women's cup marking just the fourth time that one school has held all three cups in the same season. The Generals are the only school in the league to have accomplished that feat. Additionally, W&L received both scholar-athlete awards, which had only happened in 1994 when the Generals accomplished the feat. Until now, no school had ever held all three commissioner's cups and both scholar-athletes in the same school year.
Senior men's tennis player Paul McClure (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School) was named the recipient of the "Doc" Jopson Award which is presented to the conference's top male scholar-athlete, while senior women's tennis player Lindsay Hagerman (Wichita Falls, Texas/Highland Park) was named the winner of the Majorie Berkley Award presented to the top female scholar-athlete.
McClure was a four-year letterwinner, serving as team captain this spring. A three-time First Team All-ODAC and two-time ODAC Player of the Year honoree, he twice earned All-America honors in singles. The 2005 ODAC Men’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and W&L Senior Male Athlete of the Year, he posted a 64-41 career singles record and a 58-39 career doubles mark for his career. A four-year ODAC Scholar-Athlete, McClure has maintained a 3.316 cumulative GPA as a philosophy major.
Hagerman was also a four-year letterwinner and a team captain this spring when she helped lead W&L to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division III Tournament. She also captured the NCAA Division III Singles Championship and finished her career as a seven-time All-American. A three-time All-ODAC selection and two-time ODAC Player of the Year and ODAC Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Hagerman set a school record this season by going 37-1 overall in singles. She also holds the school's career singles (117-17) and doubles (108-17) records.
The 2005 ITA National Senior Player of the Year and W&L Senior Female Athlete of the Year, Hagerman has maintained a 3.677 cumulative GPA as a history major and has been an ODAC Scholar-Athlete each of her four years.
