Numerous W&L Students Earn Fall Scholar-Athlete Awards

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that a record 242 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed fall term.  The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.50.  The prior record for scholar-athletes in the fall or winter term was 224 set during the fall of 2014.

Additionally, 19 of the students honored achieved grade-point averages of 4.0.  Among the students achieving a 4.0 GPA were senior women's basketball player Sydney Lundquist (Chattanooga, Tenn. / Notre Dame), junior women's basketball player Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale), sophomore men's cross country and track & field runner Hank Patrick (Baton Rouge, La. / University Laboratory School), sophomore women's cross country and track & field runner Caroline Nowlin (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park), senior men's lacrosse player Matthew Infante (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J. / Northern Highlands Regional), sophomore men's lacrosse player John Broderick (Manhasset, N.Y. / Chaminade), first-year men's lacrosse player Stevan Kriss (Versailles, Ky. / Lexington Catholic), sophomore women's lacrosse player Cordelia Peters (Larkspur, Calif./Hotchkiss), senior rider Ashley Ooms (Whitehouse Station, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional), senior men's track & field athletes Dan Claroni (Greenwich, Conn. / Greenwich), Harrison DeKnight (Midland Park, N.J. / Midland Park) and Jake Roberts (Kansas City, Mo. / The Barstow School), sophomore men's track & field athlete Andrew Agrippina (Atlanta, Ga. / Holy Spirit Prep), senior men's soccer player Dylan Stroud (Chester, N.J. / Delbarton School), junior men's soccer player Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg), senior women's soccer player Katie Clemmons (Phoenix, Ariz. / Chaparral), junior All-America men's swimmer Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont), first-year women's swimmer Tori Hester (Cary, N.C. / Saint Mary's School) and senior All-America women's tennis player Brooke Donnelly (Kennesaw, Ga. / Marietta).

Other notable athletes to receive Scholar-Athlete awards included 59 All-ODAC selections and seven All-America selections, including senior men's cross country and track & field athlete Ian McDonald (Richmond, Va. / Douglas S. Freeman), senior field hockey and women's lacrosse player Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md. / Roland Park Country School), senior men's golfer Conley Hurst (Little Rock, Ark. / Episcopal), junior men's golfer Luke Farley (Durham, N.C. / Trinity School), junior women's golfer Liza Freed (Alexandria, Va. / St. Stephen's & St. Agnes), senior women's track & field athlete Dana Lee (Nashville, Tenn. / St. Cecilia Academy) and senior women's swimmer Emily Rollo (Haddonfield, N.J. / Haddonfield Memorial).

All 24 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the men's golf team with a 3.747, a record for team GPA since 2000.  The coed riding team was next with a 3.589, while the highest women's team GPA was the swimming team with a 3.539.  No team recorded a GPA lower than 3.082.  

Together, the fall sports teams combined to post a 73-30-3 (.703) overall record, claiming conference titles in men's cross country, women's cross country and women's soccer.
