AUSTIN, Texas – The College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) released its 2017 Academic All-America Division III At-Large Teams on Tuesday and three Washington and Lee athletes were honored.
Women’s tennis player Brooke Donnelly (Kennesaw, Ga. / Marietta) was named to the first team, while golfer Luke Farley (Durham, N.C. / Trinity School) earned second team honors and swimmer Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont) received third team laurels.
A 2017 graduate, Donnelly was named to the first team for the second straight year. She was a W&L class valedictorian and she received the William McHenry Scholar-Athlete Award as the top female scholar-athlete at W&L earlier this spring.
An accounting and business administration major, Donnelly completed her career ranked seventh all-time at W&L with 87 singles wins (87-18) and eighth in career doubles victories (88-21). She was a four-year All-ODAC honoree and was named the 2017 ODAC Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
A three-time NCAA Championship qualifier in singles and two-time qualifier in doubles, Donnelly finished her career as a three-time All-American in singles. She was also a two-time recipient of the Elite 90 Award as having the top GPA of any player at the National Championship site. Donnelly was also named the ITA Atlantic-South region Senior Player of the Year and garnered the ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award earlier this spring.
A rising senior, Farley was named to the second team after garnering the ODAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award and earning Third Team All-ODAC honors. He played a total of 20 rounds during his junior season and claimed a 75.55 scoring average.
The mathematics major finished third overall at the 2017 ODAC Championship with a +7 score of 73-70-80—223 and tied for 46th at the 2017 NCAA Championships with a +17 score of 76-79-75-75—305.
Farley received the Elite 90 Award for men’s golf last spring, when he also garnered First Team All-ODAC, VaSID First Team All-State, First Team All-Southeast Region and Honorable Mention All-America honors.
A rising senior, Thetford was named to the third team for the second time in his career. Thetford is also a mathematics major and he too was awarded the ODAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for swimming. A First Team All-ODAC selection this winter, he won the ODAC title in the 100 (45.72) and 200 (1:40.68) freestyle events.
Thetford earned CoSIDA Third Team Academic All-America laurels last year after he won the NCAA Division III Championship in the 100 and 200 freestyle and finished second in the 50 freestyle. He currently holds the school record in the all three events (50 free – 19.65; 100 free – 34.41; 200 free – 1:36.87) and he is also part of the record-holding 400 medley relay team (3:23.90).
The three selections to the CoSIDA Academic All-America squad brings W&L's all-time total to 72 student-athletes honored since 1970. The criteria for the Academic All-American program states that a player must be of sophomore academic standing, be a starter or important reserve, and claim a GPA of at least a 3.30 on a 4.0 scale. The at-large team consists of athletes from 12 different sports. To view the full 2017 men's and women's at-large teams, please click here.
