Numerous W&L Students Earn Winter Scholar-Athlete Awards

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 205 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter term.  The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

Additionally, a record 35 of the students honored achieved a 4.0 grade-point average, besting the previous best mark of 34 set last winter term.

Among those registering a perfect GPA were junior baseball player Cory Paton (Ashton, Md. / St. Johns College), sophomore basketball player Nicholas George (Charleston, W. Plant), senior golfer Teddy Corcoran (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton), junior golfer Conley Hurst (Little Rock, Ark. / Episcopal), senior lacrosse player Caroline Hutchinson (Annapolis, Md. / St. Mary's), junior lacrosse player Corinne Wood (Phoenix, Md. / Dulaney), junior track & field athlete Daniel Claroni (Greenwich, Conn. / Greenwich), senior soccer players Becca Dunn (Houston, Texas / Memorial) and Addie Healy (Waterford, Va. / Woodgrove), sophomore swimmers Thomas Caldwell (Greenville, S.C. / Wade Hampton), John Carmody (West Des Moines, Iowa / Dowling Catholic), Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont) and Kira Tomenchok (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School), junior swimmers Cole Schott (Nashville, Tenn. / Hume-Fogg Academic) and Haylee Rademann (Folsom, Calif. / St. Francis), first-year swimmer Patrick Skillman-Lawrence (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Hartley), senior swimmers Meredith Murphy (Hillsboro, Calif. / Saint Ignatius College Prep) and Emma Swabb (Erie, Pa. / McDowell), senior tennis player Michael Holt (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin), junior tennis player Brooke Donnelly (Kennesaw, Ga. / Marietta), first-year tennis player Tessa Hill (Canton, Ohio / Jackson) and sophomore volleyball player Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif. / Quartz Hill).

The football team claimed the highest number of scholar-athlete honorees for the winter term, with 26 players being honored.  The soccer team was the women's team with the most scholar-athletes, as 16 team members achieved a GPA of 3.5 or better.

All 24 varsity athletic programs posted a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the men's golf team with a 3.661.  The highest women's team GPA was the tennis team with a 3.643 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 3.185.
