Numerous W&L Students Earn Fall Scholar-Athlete Awards

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that a record 224 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed fall term.  The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.50.  The total contains 34 more athletes than any previous fall term and is 14 more than in any previous winter term.

Additionally, 24 of the students honored achieved grade-point averages of 4.0.  Among the students achieving a 4.0 GPA were first-year men's basketball player Nicholas George (Charleston, W. Va. / Charleston Catholic), junior women's basketball and soccer player Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day), first-year women's basketball player Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale), first-year cross country and track athlete Alex Meilech (Phoenix, Ariz. / Sunnyslope), senior field hockey player Lindsay Purpura (Yarmouth, Maine / Yarmouth), first-year football player David Hogan (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian), junior men's golfer Teddy Corcoran (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton), sophomore men's golfer Conley Hurst (Little Rock, Ark. / Episcopal) and first-year men's golfers Hayden Combs (Kennett, Mo. / Memphis University School) and Luke Farley (Durham, N.C. / Trinity School), senior rider Rachel Christensen (East Brunswick, N.J. / East Brunswick), senior football and track athlete Eddie Barnes (Ashburn, Va. / Broad Run), senior track & field athlete Jillian Katterhagen (The Woodlands, Texas / The Woodlands), sophomore men's soccer player Jake Roberts (Kansas City, Mo. / Barstow School), senior women's soccer player Katherine Rush (Cornelius, N.C. / Providence Day School), sophomore men's swimmer Chris Myers (Essex, Conn. / Valley Regional), junior women's swimmer Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach), senior men's tennis player Christopher Hu (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) and junior All-America men's tennis player Michael Holt (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin), senior women's tennis player Allison Hupalo (Weston, Mass. / Weston), sophomore women's tennis player Brooke Donnelly (Kennesaw, Ga. / Marietta), junior volleyball player Maddie Kosar (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Gilmour Academy) and first-year wrestlers George Matelich (Larchmont, N.Y. / Rye Country Day) and Alex Pollera (Warren, N.J. / Watchung Hills Regional).

Other notable athletes to receive Scholar-Athlete awards included 18 First Team All-ODAC selections and a trio of All-Americans in senior tennis players Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va. / Flint Hill), Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C. / Ashley Hall) and Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany).  Four winners of the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award were also among the honorees.  They are senior lacrosse player Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. / Culver Academy), senior men's soccer player Al Organ (St. Paul, Minn. / DeLaSalle), junior women's swimmer Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach) and junior volleyball player Alex Kinzer (Greenville, S.C. / Eastside).

All 24 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the women's soccer team with a 3.612.  The highest men's team GPA was the golf team with a 3.534 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 3.020.  Together, the fall sports teams combined to post a 66-30-3 (.682) overall record while the volleyball team claimed an ODAC title.
