INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced on Sunday the individuals who qualified for the 2014 NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Championships.
The Washington and Lee men’s team received three individual qualifiers and one relay, while the W&L women’s squad garnered one competitor in the long jump.
For the men, senior Zander Tallman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Cranbrook-Kingswood) will compete in the 400m, senior Kevin Sullivan (Sandwich, Mass./Tabor) in the javelin, junior Aaron Jeong (Federal Way, Wash./Thomas Jefferson) in the 100m and the 4x100m relay made the 16-team field.
Tallman enters the meet with the second-fastest time among the 20 competitors in the 400m at 47.35. He registered the time at the Dr. Keeler Invitational on May 8, and it marked a new career best and broke his own W&L record. This is the third time Tallman has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He also has competed in two Indoor NCAA Championships, including a third-place finish at the 2014 meet to earn W&L’s first male All-America honor since 1969.
Sullivan will be making his first trip to an NCAA Championship, competing in the javelin. He has the sixth-best throw out of the 20 athletes at 63.76m (209’02.00”). He recorded the toss at the ODAC Championship on April 19. It set a W&L, ODAC and ODAC meet record.
In the 100m, Jeong enters the event with the 15th-fastest time (10.65) out of 20 participants. He registered the time at the Liberty Twilight on May 1, which broke his own program record. This is his first time qualifying for an NCAA Outdoor Championship. Jeong competed in the 60m at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championship taking 12th.
The Generals’ 4x100m relay consists of Tallman, Jeong, and seniors Agustin Kim (La Habra, Calif./Troy) and Cole Glasgow (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep). The quartet comes into the championship with the 14th-best time out of 16 squads at 41.47. The W&L record time was set at the Dr. Keeler Invitational on May 8.
First-year Dana Lee (Nashville, Tenn./St. Cecilia Academy) is the lone female qualifier for the Blue and White. Lee will compete in the long jump, entering with the ninth-best mark of 5.73m (18’09.75”) out of 20 athletes. She registered the jump at the Liberty Twilight on May 1 to break the program record. Lee finished ninth in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championship earlier this year.
The championships will be held May 22-24 at Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware Ohio. On Thursday, Lee will compete in the long jump at 3:30 pm and the 4x100m relay prelim is at 5:45 pm. Tallman runs in the 400m prelims on Friday at 7:15 pm, and Jeong also competes that day in the 100m prelims at 7:45 pm. Sullivan will take part in the javelin on Saturday at 3:00 pm. The finals for the 4x100m relay (1:50 pm), the 400m (3:05 pm) and the 100m (3:25 pm) are also on Saturday.
